While experiencing the therapeutic benefits of art, young people work with a professional teaching artist in a specific art form.

Art Heals

During 2014, Free Arts provided over 40 Professional Artist Series ranging in artistic disciplines throughout the Phoenix- Metro area.  We connected 850 children with professional artists who introduced the kids to new art skills and their lives as working professional artists.  Free Arts participants in the Professional Artist Series were able to utilize their new skills as coping methods and celebrated their accomplishments through exhibits or performances.  We also began a mural program which allowed professional artists and youth to collaborate on four murals in the Phoenix area.  On her experience during the Professional Artist Series, Autumn, age 16, shared with us, “I learned that things don’t always work out how you imagined them but they work out in the end.”

The Professional Artist Series commissions professional teaching artists to work with young people in a specific art form in in-depth sessions. Children also get the message that they are capable of doing many things in life. They are given the opportunity to learn how to dream again about their future.  These series often culminate in a final performance or exhibition.

Our Newest Crew YLT Turns One!

In its first full year, the Youth Leadership Team (YLT) worked hard creating processes and procedures for their program.  This team of 8 exceptional young adults created a mission statement, elected officers, and administered a selection process for new members.   They also flawlessly led other Free Arts youth in a Spoken Word workshop at a Free Arts Day, served as artist assistants and junior counselors in the Camp Series, and spoke brilliantly at several Free Arts events including the Art Auction and the Every Child Matters Luncheon.  Individually they accomplished some goals including starting college, securing a full time job, landing a part in a school play and recording original music in a real recording studio! They recently took on several new members, doubling the size of their team.  In 2015 they are looking forward to participating in an intensive leadership training program and Free Arts looks forward to providing these exceptional young people the resources and support they need to reach their goals.
