On Wednesday, April 4th, Free Arts had the privilege of showcasing our newest exhibit, Chapters, inside the beautiful halls of Saks Fifth Avenue at Biltmore Fashion Park. As part of our Professional Artists Series, teaching artist, Shari Keith, and teens from a residential treatment center worked on deconstructed books. The process allowed for the teens to explore their past experiences, present situations, and their future hopes. Fondly nicknamed The Junk Lady, Shari showed the teens how to use pages from used children’s books and other reused materials to create their works of art. On the evening of the exhibit, Free Arts staff and supporters joined the families of the artists for a reception. Artist shared their personal experiences working on the projects. As one artist stated, “It helped me a lot in realizing that art helps and also that grown-ups have felt the same as I.” Before the event was over, the featured artist of our Art from the Heart Auction, Fred Tieken, shared his journey as a professional artist and encouraged our budding teen artists to pursue their passions. The night capped off with a celebration dinner at Zin Burger. The smiles on the teens’ faces lit up the whole room as they walked away from a beautiful evening.
