One of Free Arts’ main goals when purchasing our new building was to expand our offices to allow us to hold some of our quality programs on site. On Saturday, May 5th, we hosted Fiesta Day, part of our Free Arts Day program, for 130 children from 19 foster care group homes, shelters and treatment centers. The day celebrated various cultures by creating piñatas, joining an African drumming circle, sharing spoken word poetry, and showing off skills on a Chinese yo-yo. The children worked with one of five professional artists to create their art, which many eagerly shared in our open courtyard. In a poignant moment, a 16 year old boy from a foster care group home opened up about his strained relationship with his mother. He used the power of spoken-word poetry to dive deep into his struggles. He was met by the thunderous applause of his peers who supported him during his performance. At the end of the program, one of our volunteer mentors reflected on the day’s events sharing, “It was a very positive atmosphere. What an amazing event!” The children seemed to echo the sentiment. We are grateful to be afforded the opportunity to provide these types of events on site, and we look forward to what’s to come.
