In our Free Arts Day programs, we pair our caring volunteer mentors with children to support them as they express themselves during one-day creative programs often in partnership with local arts and culture organizations. Typically, Free Arts will schedule one or two Free Arts Days a month. This December, we were determined to reach as many children as we could, so we hosted seven Free Arts Days! During the course of December, children throughout the Valley experienced the joy of creating holiday art projects, making gifts for loved ones, and viewing the magic of The Nutcracker ballet. All Free Arts staff got into the spirit of the holidays by volunteering at one of the Free Arts Days at Garcia Elementary School in Phoenix. Free Arts led the art activities and helped each child make reindeer hats and nametags. This event was in conjunction with our partner nonprofit, Positive Network Alliance. Each year, Positive Network Alliance brings the joy of the holidays to local schools by offering pictures with Santa, a Christmas museum to explore, and the opportunity to select a Christmas present of the child’s choice. “You could tell that the children felt excitement and delight as they went through all of the activities,” states Free Arts Program Manager, Marisa Arellano. “You could really see their spirits be lifted.” At the end of the month, we were able to bring holiday joy and the transformative power of art to 1,912 children thanks to the dedication of our volunteer mentors and staff. We look forward to a new year and new opportunities!
