The self-portraits and poems in this exhibit were created by young men and women ages 12-18 living in Child Protective Services custody. Throughout the workshop, young people explored their identities; reflecting on memories, personality traits, and dreams. They used these facets of their identity to answer the question “why do I matter?” Through this healing process they discovered that a self-portrait does not have to be a picture of a face. A portrait can depict thoughts, emotions, strengths and weaknesses. ALL of these elements make up who they are. ALL of these things matter.
